You may have noticed our diligent ushers especially preoccupied with those sitting in the pews lately. Every year the Archdiocese of Washington requires that every person attending weekend Masses throughout the month of October be counted. The totals are put on a sheet and submitted to the Archdiocese. Why this exercise? The numbers are actually very important. They help determine how many copies of the Catholic Standard a parish gets or how many Priests a parish needs. The figures also help us determine demographic changes: Is a parish growing or shrinking? Does the Mass schedule work based on the number of people attending each Mass? God bless our ushers and their mathematics teachers – and thank them.
