Although Lent is a season of prayer, penance and charity, there are two major feasts that occur during these forty days. On March 19th the Church observes the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The 25th of March is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, celebrating the Virgin Mary’s “yes” to the invitation of the Archangel Gabriel to become the Mother of God. At that moment the Holy Spirit overshadowed her and the Christ Child was conceived in her virginal womb. This solemnity, then, falls exactly nine months before we celebrate the Lord’s Birth of Christmas Day.
