The Month of the Blessed Mother
For Catholics the month of May belongs to our Blessed Mother. The beautiful stories from the Gospels, the hymns and prayers, and expressions in art all bring out the many dimensions of the Mother of God. The Virgin Mary is our mother too because Jesus gave her to us from the Cross. Like John we treasure her as we “behold our mother” but know that at every moment she looks on us with love as her own son or daughter.
Our devotion to Our Lady should include the regular recitation of the Rosary (especially as a family). In addition, it is a time honored custom to set up a May Altar in the home – a place where a statue or picture of the Blessed Mother is placed with candles and flowers to honor her and focus the family’s attention during the month. Placing a statue of the Virgin Mary in the yard or garden is a great act of devotion not only for us, but for visitors and neighbors. There are many ways to ask the Mother of God to intercede for us with her Son, Jesus.
To Our Lady
Lovely Lady dressed in blue, teach me how to pray!
God was just your little Boy, tell me what to say.
Did you lift Him up sometimes, gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way Mother does to me?
Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
telling stories of the world?
O! and did He cry?
Do you really think He cares
if I tell him things –
little things that happen?
And do angels’ wings
make a noise? And can He hear me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now? Tell me – for you know!
Lovely Lady, dressed in blue, teach me how to pray!
God was just your little Boy.
And you know the way.
